Spring in Svalbard is a very special time. The landscape is still covered in snow and ice, but the light returns and wildlife slowly becomes more active again. The soft Arctic colours and the ever-changing sea ice create beautiful conditions for photography.

On this micro-cruise expedition, I’ll be guiding you in the field and help you get the most out of each situation, whether that’s working with the light, approaching wildlife, or simply taking the time to observe. With a small group, we can stay flexible and adapt to what we encounter along the way.

The trip itself is operated by Secret Atlas, who take care of the logistics and run the expedition. I’ll be there throughout the journey to guide you and support you with your photography.

Itinerary

Day 1: Departure from Longyearbyen

We depart Longyearbyen in the late afternoon and head out into the Arctic wilderness. As we leave the settlement behind, we pass the impressive Fuglefjella, also known as Bird Mountain, a striking example of Svalbard’s plateau landscape where steep cliffs rise directly from the sea.

A beautiful first introduction to Svalbard, with time to settle on board and take in the surroundings as the expedition begins.

Day 2-9: Exploring Svalbard

This trip really just unfolds. From that point on the days are shaped by ice, weather and whatever the captain and expedition team decide makes sense in the moment. Expect a mix of zodiac cruises along glacier fronts, landings at old whaling huts and trapper cabins, walks near walrus colonies, and quiet hours scanning the ice edge for polar bears, seals and seabirds. Some mornings might bring a visit to a research station, others a slow cruise past bird cliffs or a calving glacier. Nothing is locked in because the ice and the animals decide a lot of it, so the crew stays flexible and adjusts the route as conditions change. What actually happens really depends on what the arctic offers that week.

Day 10: Return to Longyearbyen

We arrive back in Longyearbyen in the morning and disembark around 9 am. After days in the Arctic wilderness, this marks the end of the journey.
